becoming a necessity in all construction projects. We are also making huge strides in the mining sector where we mainly target waste beneficiation, such as iron ore dump treatment.  “Our bespoke solutions for our customers enable them to tackle even the hardest wet processing applications in their current operations. By using our equipment, the environmental benefits are significant, not the least of which is that up to 90% of the process water is recycled. A wet processing operation can use a minimum of 100 000 litres per hour, which is basically clean water being converted into dirt and then pumped or piped away into a settling dam, when it exits the washing system. With CDE’s equipment, 90% of this process water (90 000 litres per hour) gets recycled and immediately reused. That’s not only a different offering, of course, but one that we believe will become increasingly essential if and when compliance legislature regarding water usage in southern Africa is enforced more stringently and regularly.” Message to the sector Govender believes there is great potential not only in developing specific market sectors, such as quarries and mines, but, importantly, in providing technology and equipment that can effectively tackle and minimise the very real environmental problems that these industries create, and which need to be addressed urgently. The executive adds, “Another critical issue is of course producing a consistent, high-quality product, and for the concrete industry particularly, our solution — which begins in the quarry — ensures this need not be an issue in the future. The CDE name is synonymous with cutting- edge technology and fresh ideas in the wet processing world,” he claims. News/innovations “The good news for our customers is that CDE has just purchased the Caterpillar 27 871m 2 plant in Northern Ireland and this means that we can cut our lead times down considerably and increase capacity five-fold, drastically cutting lead times for project delivery in sub-Saharan Africa. CDE also recently launched its Meta division focusing on the mining industry,” he adds. Govender continues: “These two significant announcements demonstrate the company’s considerable commitment not only to the region but also to meet demand and respond to the company’s rapid expansion. “Our equipment and engineering prowess has seen major growth in Africa and we are delighted that we can not only reduce lead times but also deliver a fully integrated and bespoke service to our customers. Our compliance standards — for water recycling, health and safety — are beyond exemplary and our customers are realising the value of gaining significant competitive advantage through maximising return on their investment while minimising environmental impacts,” he adds with pride. Working with the engineering team in Northern Ireland, Govender has recently sold a plant to a North West mining operation, whereby the customer will now use a state-of-the- art wet processing M-Series plant with the patented Fine Screen technology for waste dump recovery. The team has also just installed and commissioned the first Combo Alpha Sand Plant at a local clay brick operation in Springs, Gauteng, where it is producing a washed plaster sand from alluvial sand. CDE products have been sold in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West Province, KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the Western Cape. This means that many areas across South Africa are already saving masses of water, especially with the unexpected drought seasons. PROFILE Having seen huge potential in South Africa and the rest of Africa in general, Nicolan Govender joined CDE Global on 1 July 2015 as the regional manager Africa. “The African continent has high infrastructure demands and CDE’s wet processing systems are ideal for quarrying and aggregate sectors, supplying large construction and infrastructure projects.” Last word With its global headquarters in Cookstown, Northern Ireland, CDE Global has the world’s largest campus dedicated to the wet processing of materials in the sand and aggregates, mining, C&D waste recycling, industrial sands, and environmental sectors. “There is nothing available on the market that compares with CDE’s wet processing equipment and we are now in a unique position to advise the market and help customers to realise how they can improve their business performance,” says Govender. nn CEC May 2018 - 29
