PROJECT ALERTS Project updates courtesy of Leads 2 Business. Conceptual Design Social infrastructure Industrial infrastructure Zimbabwe Mozambique City of Harare has revealed plans to build a small football stadium, the High Glen Stadium, in the High Glen suburb of the capital city. In preparation, since 2015 the City has demolished approximately 500 houses in the High Glen area opposite the Budiriro high-density suburb to build the soccer stadium, leaving hundreds of residents homeless, though the City insists that the structures were illegal as residents had generally been duped by land barons to build their homes there. More than USD1.4-million has been set aside in preparation for the construction. According to the Council the stadium was meant to decentralise services and would see people around the Budiriro area coming to watch football matches, musical festivals, and other sporting activities. The project would take three to four years to complete, and to achieve that the project has been broken down into small, manageable goals. The intention for this year is to get to design phase. Designs have been called for the construction of an industrial park of approximately 4 923ha as part of a larger planned Palma Industrial Park and Complex in Northern Mozambique, which itself will cover an area of 18 000ha. It will be divided into: • an industrial park • a business centre (609ha) • a convention centre (534ha) • a services and commercial centre (256ha) • housing and equipment storage (3 532ha) • tourism buildings (179ha) • leisure and sports (3 276ha) and • an ecological park (2 880ha). The Palma Industrial Park will include a 600m 2 galvanised steel and masonry warehouse with a 300m 2 lay down area, security fencing surrounding the perimeter of the park, 24-hour security guards, and security lighting with generator back-up in case of emergencies. Tender Procedural Road infrastructure Industrial infrastructure Kenya Uganda Tenders have been called for part of the rehabilitation and capacity enhancement of James Gichuru Road Junction – Rironi Highway in Kenya. The road section is part of the A104 international highway which commences at Namanga and proceeds northwesterly to Athi River and on to the Kenya/Uganda border at Malaba. The section is located in Nairobi and Kiambu counties. Phase two of the road works spans 12km is estimated to cost KES25-billion to connect Likoni Road to James Gichuru Road on Waiyaki Way in Westlands, while the final segment (25km) runs from James Gichuru Road to Rironi on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, this section will cost KES16-billion. Designs for the first two phases are being finalised before tendering, with construction expected to get underway early next year. The entire project is valued at USD158-million. Major items of works include: earthworks; cold milling of existing pavement layers; recycling of the road surface after cold milling, with addition of cement and graded crushed stone to form subbase; provision of a stress absorbing membrane interlayer, provision of base using dense bitumen macadam. Alebtong district local government has allocated to government more than 307ha of land for the establishment of an industrial park, Moroto Industrial Park, Uganda. The land is located in Akura sub county on the border of Lira district and Alebtong. Plans for the construction of the Moroto Industrial Park are still underway, and are currently being promoted as the ‘China’s footprint in Uganda’s industrial sector.’ Uganda has nine industrial parks that are yet to be fully developed. However, government’s five-year plan is to have 22 operational industrial parks. Functional industrial parks covering four regions of the country will be developed by the end of four years, beginning with the completion of Kampala Industrial Business Park, Namanve, Nakasongola and the others. The government’s plan of constructing the industrial parks has dragged on in most parts of the country due to land disputes, high prices of land and delayed approval of the infrastructural designs. Some of the districts that the government earmarked to host industrial parks include Jinja, Masindi, Mbale, Moroto, Lira, Gulu, and Kyenjonjo. 30 | CEC July 2019 www.civilsonline.co.za
