The R90-million upgrading of Broadway Boulevard and associated works from
Beach Road to the De Beers Interchange in Somerset West, Western Cape, has
been awarded to Martin & East. The timing is 18 months from January 2019 to July
2020. The City of Cape Town (CCT), in conjunction with Paardevlei Properties,
South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), and the provincial government of
the Western Cape, has embarked on a non-motorised Transport (NMT) and road
capacity upgrade of the R44 between Beach Road and Somerset West Main Road.
The R44/De Beers Interchange project involves the enlarging of the
interchange to comprise the remarking of the current N2 overpass to three lanes
per direction, the widening of the eastbound N2 off-ramp terminal with the R44,
two bridges (for pedestrians and cyclists), and the widening of the northbound
R44 approach to the southern ramp terminal. The project management team for
this project identified that due to the proposed remarking of the N2 overpass, the
provision for NMT users was compromised. Furthermore, it was identified that
between Beach Road and Somerset West Main Road, there was inconsistent or
lack of provision for NMT users along the R44. nn
