One of the major findings of the 2013
Sangamon County Citizen Survey was that 31
percent of residents reported not having
access to a community garden and they
needed access. In addition, individuals with
lower incomes were more likely to report that
they needed access to a community garden.
At that time, there were 10 community
gardens located in Sangamon County.
In 2015, there are 21 community gardens
located in Sangamon County with all of them
situated within the Springfield metro area.
With this increased access, the 2015 survey
finds a slightly lower percentage of individuals
who report they do not currently have access
and they need access (26 percent). Yet, access
to community gardens among low income
residents has not improved (as seen in the
figure below).
