The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has
changed the system of health care in
the United States with the
requirement that all Americans have
health insurance, as well as the
provision that no one can be denied
due to pre-existing conditions.1
And while Sangamon County ranks
first among all the 102 Illinois
counties in terms of access to care2
(2015 County Health Rankings and
Roadmaps), having access to care has
not always translated to people being
able to receive health care. The
results of the 2015 Sangamon County
Citizen survey indicate an increase in
the rates of insured residents as well
as those who report having a primary
care physician. Eighty-nine percent of
residents now report having a
primary health care provider (PCP).
This is up three percentage points
from the 2013 survey. But maybe
even more significant, 96 percent of
those surveyed report having health
insurance coverage. This is up almost
seven percentage points from the
2013 survey. In addition, the percent
of Sangamon County residents who
report that there have been times in
the past 12 months when they did
not have enough money to pay for
health care or medicines decreased
from 21 percent in 2013 to 15
percent in 2015.The figure depicts
the results of the 2013 survey, the
2015 survey, as well as the most
recent Behavioral Risk Factor
Surveillance System Survey (BRFSS).
