Second Graders Learning Well Under New Math In Focus Curriculum
Second grade teacher Jean Little has noticed a striking difference between her current group of second graders and the ones she taught in previous years.
During math lessons, some of her former students would display a lack of confidence as they struggled to grasp the material. In contrast, this year’s students seem to have a better understanding of basic concepts, and they are much more eager to solve
problems in front of their classmates. Little credits this change in attitude to Providence Day’s new lower school math curriculum, Math in Focus...Singapore Math.
“I have watched their confidence soar [under the new program],” she said. “They’re risk takers now...before, I would not even see the hands going up [to answer a question] because they were so afraid of not knowing the right answer.” Little's comment reflects
