This year, coach Miki Osherow has huge plans for the powerhouse field hockey team

Coach Miki Osherow is leading the Providence Day field hockey team to victory on and off the field. Their record is currently 15-3.

Despite many injuries, including a two and a half week long concussion for captain Hannah Scully and an injury to goalie Abbey Anne Briggs, PDS varsity field hockey continues to compete with their top rivals Charlotte Country Day and Charlotte Latin.

Coach O credits their many wins and undefeated tournaments to “good passing and off the ball movement.” It is also due to the strong sophomore-heavy starting lineup, whose undefeated middle school season and comradery off the field led to a positive start of the season.

Part of the team’s “synergy,” as Coach O calls it, has to do with the revolving captain system, a new way of letting experienced players contribute to the team. Other than Hannah Scully, who is permanently captain, the senior girls take turns leading drills and giving pep talks. Coach O says this idea came about because “in preseason and the summer the seniors worked so well leading the team together I wanted to keep that going throughout the season.”

So far, the season has brought mostly joyful outcomes. A recent 1-0 win against Charlotte Latin shows the team's immense improvement-- they lost 4-1 against the same team earlier in the year. Two wins against the competitive matchup, Myers Park High School, also shows the team's dedication to being the best in their conference.

Coach O has more good things to say about her seniors other than their ability to lead a team on the field. “All of our seniors have GPAs of over 4.0 and participate in a lot of activities in their community. This showcase this in an article and hopefully get picked up by the press.”

The team and its seniors recently appeared in the Charlotte Observer after incredible wins last week over Country Day, Ardrey Kell, and Durham Academy. They are awaiting the championship tournament Halloween weekend. Coach Osherow is excited, and hopes her team will come together healthy and strong in time for the games.

Field Hockey: Championship bound?

"I think everybody's a top player. The individual talent comes together well and it really translates on the field."
