THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 7 May 2020 Civic Affairs By WAYNE RICHARDS What is your opinion on term limits in Wilsonville? I’m so proud of being a part of a community that cares about each other and are willing to go out of their way to protect each other dur- ing this virus crisis. Thank you all. It wouldn’t be a civic affairs column if I didn’t mention two things. We have a choice May 19 regarding whether term limits are a good idea or not for Wilson- Charbonneau Tennis Club By STEVE HALL Charbonneau/Wilsonville Tennis Tournament set for June is canceled ville. It is, of course, your choice. I just ask myself why. We have term lim- its called elections now and it just seems that term RICHARDS limits: Q Reduce your election choice be- cause existing councilors and the May- or can’t run if they have served their time limit. Q Reduce experience in managing a city as complex as Wilsonville. Q Ends long-term relationships with other regional leaders. Even if you consider just these three things, it is why — in a statistically valid, non-biased survey — the National Re- search Center’s National Citizens Survey gave Wilsonville one of its highest rat- ings. Every time. For the last 12 years, Wilsonville is rated one of the Top 10 cit- ies out of 500 surveyed in America for cit- izen satisfaction. You can read these re- ports for yourself at www.ci.wilsonville. or.us/CommunitySurvey. For many of us, that’s leadership in action. I’ve thought about it myself and wonder why we would want to arbitrarily change leader- ship if not for some specific agenda? You might look at www.protectwilsonville. org for more information about all of this. Speaking of specific agendas, we still have an issue. The COVID-19 pandemic got me thinking about lung health and health in general. I, for one, have usu- ally taken my health for granted. I looked up benzo(a)pyrene (one of 11 toxic jet exhaust elements), lead from Avgas, and carbon monoxide from the airplanes, and from our already over- crowded surface roads. I was just wondering why we were even thinking about expansion of a business that is linked to a leading cause of air pollution in America with- out a detailed Environmental Impact Statement. We breathe this air. Thank you all. In order to pro- tect our club mem- bers from the nov- el coronovirus, the indoor tennis facili- ty was closed Fri- day, March 20. HALL Then several days later, when the Or- egon governor specified stricter social distancing rules, the outdoor facility was also closed. In addition, the annual Charbonneau/ Wilsonville Tennis Tournament, which was scheduled for June 25, was canceled. When things settle down we may decide to run a smaller club tournament. We will continue to be aware of the advice we receive from health officials and Charbonneau Country Club man- agement, and will reopen the club when we believe it is safe to do so. Our janitorial staff is continuing to work to keep the tennis facility clean so it will be easy to reopen once it is decided to do so. Coach Bruce Reed has informed us that he has some ideas concerning both tennis and pickleball to get everyone in- volved once again when appropriate. Coach Bruce will post a YouTube tennis video every Wednesday in May. Look for “Coach Bruce Tennis Tips 2020.” WHY TERM LIMITS? Ask Yourself WHO GAINS? WHO LOSES? Those who lose would be all Wilsonville citizens because we would lose leadership, valuable experience, knowledge, and very important relationships built over time.
