together as a community after disas-
ters. Helping others is one thing that
makes us human. If we can plan now for
some of the worst-case scenarios, we
will be able to handle the little stuff easi-
ly. Charbonneau is already more coordi-
nated than many neighborhoods.”
Some CERT participants take the
training just to know more about how
to help their family and neighbors.
Many take an additional online course
from FEMA and hands-on training to
become CERT volunteers who will be
ready to deploy to other communities
in case of a local disaster.
For anyone from Charbonneau who
was not able to attend the November
course, the next opportunity for train-
ing will be in January in Aurora.
The next Basic CERT Course will be
taught at the Aurora Fire Station on
two consecutive weekends: Friday,
Jan. 10 from 6-9 p.m., Saturday,
Jan. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., then on
Friday, Jan. 17, from 6-9 p.m. and
Saturday, Jan. 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Emergency Preparedness com-
mittee encourages residents to take ad-
vantage of opportunities like Basic
CERT to improve the resilience of our
community during an emergency. Hav-
ing trained CERT volunteers through-
out the Charbonneau neighborhoods
adds another layer of preparation to
our community’s emergency plans.
Please contact Greg Leo or Rachel
Leo at [email protected]
to reserve a spot in the January Basic
CERT training prior to Wednesday,
Jan. 8, 2020.

More about CERT
The CERT concept was developed
by the Los Angeles Fire Department
in 1985, and showed its utility in the
1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake
when the ability of civilians to meet
their immediate needs proved to be
key to resilience during and after a
disaster. The course is sponsored
nationally by FEMA and enables
civilians to collaborate seamlessly
with FEMA personnel and other
emergency responders.
Register for Basic CERT
The course is free and materi-
als for the class are included.
