THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 17 February 2020 Men’s Club Q From Page 16 than they can do separately; they can be more successful together than they can separately; they can create more “value” together than they can separately; they can in- crease revenues and lower costs working together than they can separately. OK, so I’m an optimist — a really big one. From my reading and study about the golfing industry as a whole, there was an overbuilding of golf courses in the past decades. The growth in number of golfers leveled off, and so many courses could not survive. The recent good news is that the number of golf courses is better matched with the number of golfers expected in fu- ture decades. Even more good news is that golf is growing at the youth level. Even more growth may come from the trend that golf in past years was primarily the sport of an elite segment of soci- ety, while the trend in youth golf- ers is very much more diverse and less elite; meaning the future of golf may see a sustainable and fi- nancially healthy level of growth in future decades. Time will tell. Lastly, my optimism is based on many years of marketing and busi- ness planning in my previous work experience. Charbonneau has some unique characteristics com- pared to other standard golf cours- es. These can be highlighted as a venue to attract a loyal following of golfers, as well as venue for cor- porate and private meetings and events. All of my optimism will not play out as real, but it is often more fun and successful to give it a good effort to achieve an optimis- tic future, than to allow pessimism to prevent any effort at all. Again, time will tell.
