THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 9 September 2019 Charbonneau Men’s Club By JOHN MCLAIN The bigger the bird, the lower the score Many of you dedi- cated yourself to playing golf as a sport when you re- tired. I did too, when I moved here to MCLAIN Charbonneau. What started as a frustra- tion, balls flying everywhere but where I thought I was aiming, has slowly grown into an enjoyable walk in the park with friends. There is a lot to learn about scor- ing a round of golf, especially the golf lingo: gross, handicap index, net, bo- gies, pars, and birdies were easy enough to understand. Eagles (i.e. two under par) were something I’ve rarely encountered, but they are al- ways in my mind (i.e. in my dreams). Then there is the albatross (i.e. three under par), but I haven’t really imag- ined I could get a hole in one on a par four hole here in Charbonneau. We do have a few big hitters in the Men’s Club that might pull it off. At PGE. com, one expert explains the “bird theme” for under-par scores as “the size of the bird gets bigger as the score gets lower, hence birdie, eagle, albatross and condor.” I had never heard of a condor as a golf term. It is defined as four under par, such as scoring a one on a par five hole, or a two on a par six hole. At PGE.com, “A condor is so uncommon in the sport of golf that bookmakers don’t even offer odds on such a feat.” When you apply the bird theme to an 18-hole round of golf at Charbonneau, it is possible (only in our dreams) for a man or woman to achieve a maxi- mum of 18 birdies, or a maximum of 18 eagles, or a maximum of eight al- batrosses. But never a condor. For a condor, you will have to play other courses that have holes that are par five and then try for a hole in one. Probably best if it is a severe dog-leg shape, where you can try to hit the drive over the trees, cutting the corner, landing on the green with a 260-yard shot, the wind at your back and downhill too. Only then can you say “I am one of the rare players to have condored a hole of golf.” Custom Designed Kitchens & Bathrooms “We build cabinets the old fashion way!” Noah Built the Ark without a computer.
