the prospect of a major
earthquake in our area.
Little known fact: Dr.
Burns is also an expert on
what makes Pacific North-
west wines unique, and,
guess what? It’s the geology.
For this special event, Dr.
Burns will be explaining why
the very soil that Oregon
and Washington wines grow
in makes them unique. This
is what is called the “terroir”
of the wine and Dr. Burns
has been studying this as-
pect of wine in our region for
27 years. In fact, he was the
person who discovered the
secret of the three main soils
in the Willamette Valley,
which is the basis for the
unique taste to our Pinot
Noirs and Rieslings.
In the regional wine indus-
try, they call him “Dr. Dirt,”
and he wears the nickname
proudly.
“I am getting excited about
the wine talk that I will be
giving at Charbonneau on
September 10,” he told me.
Then, Dr. Burns explained
that after his presentation, he
could talk about the specific
terroir of wines that people
bring to the event.
He asks that you bring a
bottle of Oregon or Washing-
ton wine, preferably estate
bottled, and wine glasses for
tasting. Then he says, “I will
help each person know about
the terroir of each of their
wines. They can share with
others. I can explain each of
them and they can taste and
learn for themselves.”
“It will be fun!!!” he con-
cluded, and the multiple ex-
clamation points are his. So
let’s have some fun learning
about the terroir of our re-
gion’s wines.
Social time starts at 6 p.m.
in the Country Club dining
