THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER 27 October 2019 SpringRidge at Charbonneau By KERRY PHILLIPS Transitions yield unexpected benefi ts for SpringRidge residents Ruth Corcoran and Nancy and Walt Kaesler found their desire to transition to an easier, mainte- nance-free lifestyle at SpringRidge came with a host of unexpected ben- efits — from enhanced social circles to a greater sense of independence! Ruth moved to the active retire- ment community over a year ago to be closer to her son, Kevin Smith, in West Linn. “Mom was very open to moving from San Diego,” said Kevin. “She knew my wife and I had done exten- sive research on senior living com- munities in the area and trusted our judgment. She moved to SpringRidge sight unseen and is happier than I’ve seen her in years.” Kevin narrowed down his list of eight possibilities to four that were worth an in-person visit. Spring- Ridge’s consistency of staff, ambi- ance and value stood out among competitors. “We found there was longevity among staff — from the executive di- rector to the nurses and staff. Every- one was committed to residents and the community,” he explained. “Ev- ery time we visited, the aura was positive, happy and engaging.” COURTESY PHOTO Nancy and Walt Kaesler explore the area. Kevin has found his mother’s op- portunities for social enrichment an unexpected benefit of life at Spring- Ridge. Though she had been success- fully living on her own for many years, she wasn’t getting out as much and had limited interactions. “Now, she sees people daily and has more friends than she ever could imagine,” he said. “She’s with people from her own generation and who have shared interests. She wouldn’t have access to these new relationships had she continued to live alone.” Ruth’s neighbors, Nancy and Walt, also relocated from out of state to SpringRidge to be closer to family. They lived in Colorado and have called Oregon home for five months. “Our daughter lives about 15 min- utes away from SpringRidge,” said Walt. “We were familiar with the community because her former mother-in-law lived at SpringRidge. We liked the environment and the management team so we knew it’d be a good fit for us.” Although he misses the moun- tains, Walt said it was important to transition to a retirement communi- ty while he and Nancy were still able to take advantage of the wealth of programs and activities. Though they are still settling into their new residence, they’ve participated in several outings organized by Sprin- gRidge and have begun exploring the area. Without the hassles of day-to-day home maintenance and chores, Walt says he and Nancy have more free- doms. “There are no repairs to think about and someone else does the cleaning,” he said. “It’s also nice not having to cook. The Charbonneau Room offers great food, lots of choic- es and great flexibility.” The Kaeslers find SpringRidge’s “lock and leave” lifestyle is also con- ducive to their active lifestyle which involves travel. They still have a condo in Estes Park in Colorado and plan to visit periodically. They have added peace of mind knowing their SpringRidge residence will be safe in their absence. “Ruth, Nancy and Walt are such a testament to the notion of successful aging and being open to new possi- bilities and discoveries,” said Spring- Ridge’s Executive Director Garth Hallman. “When you view a transi- tion as the opportunity for some- thing new as opposed to ‘change,’ it can really shift one’s mindset.” Kevin concurs and encourages adult children who are considering a retirement community for their par- ents to have a good understanding of their current situation and how tran- sitioning to a maintenance-free life- style will bring about new, positive results. “The conversation needs to have feelings such as patience, love, un- derstanding and empathy woven in,” he advises. “By taking the time to do your homework and involving your parent as much as possible, you’ll find the happiness quotient is much higher.” Nestled on an impeccable, 10-acre parcel of natural beauty and sereni- ty, SpringRidge at Charbonneau is located in one of Oregon’s most de- sirable master-planned residential communities. The SpringRidge at Charbonneau campus offers a com- prehensive menu of lifestyle options including CARF-accredited indepen- dent living as well as assisted living and memory care services at Spring- Ridge Court.
