I had heard that before. I wasn’t safe in my mother’s home and I knew I wasn’t safe from her now. It happened all before when I asked for help. But this time, I knew she was going to kill me. Sometime, for certain. Safety is imperative for the child fight- ing abuse and neglect. Research has ex- plained the child’s response to trauma is: freeze, flee or fight. The young brain has only this response, so all foster children need help to work through their sorrow, loss and anger because they enter foster care through no fault of their own. Boy and Girls Aid addresses the safety of these fragile children statewide. The Cypress Branch volunteers of Boys and Girls Aid focuses on the needs of foster children in Washington and Multnomah Counties. Permanency for the children is the overarching framework of the Boys and Girls Aid. The focus is that every child deserves a forever family, where they can feel loved and worthy of a place in this world. Getting the children to explore where they came from helps them chart their future. This program helps ensure their return home or to a new family will be successful. Boys and Girls Aid cares for infants, runaways, children aging out of foster care and those children who have been in the foster care system for any length of time. They offer residential independent living services and therapeutic foster homes, among other programs geared to evaluating and stabilizing boys and girls in certified foster homes. A program that supports and nurtures our children, deserves our support. It has mine. The Cypress Volunteer Auxiliary is open to members throughout the north Willamette Valley. To find out more about our programs, come to our next luncheon at Spring- Ridge Nov. 15. Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and the cost is $15 at the door.
