W
hile Richard Demers and
Len Nevarez were both
initially attracted to
SpringRidge at Charbon-
neau’s picturesque, idyllic location,
it’s been the camaraderie among fel-
low veterans that brings them the
greatest joy as residents at the active
retirement community.
“We all share a commonality,” said
Len, who served nearly three decades in
the Army. “Joining the military was a
rite of passage for my generation. It’s re-
freshing to be able to share stories about
my time in the service with others who
have similar experiences.”
The gentlemen also praise Spring-
Ridge’s commitment to resident veter-
ans through special activities and pro-
grams such as the “Where Were You
During WWII?” Luncheon and the “Wall
November 2019
of Honor,” a permanent photo display
that serves as a reminder of sacrifices
made by servicemen and women. On
Nov. 11 in honor of Veterans Day, the
community will induct four new veter-
ans to the “Wall” and acknowledge their
military service. A pinning ceremony
will also pay tribute to all who bravely
fought to defend our freedoms.
The event, at 3:30 p.m., is open to the
public and is free of charge. The Color
Guard from the Canby American Legion
will present and retire SpringRidge at
Charbonneau’s flags and a patriotic per-
formance by Matthew Casey is scheduled.
“I find it meaningful to have Spring-
Ridge honor veterans and our nation on
holidays — from Independence Day to
Veterans Day and Memorial Day,” added
Len.
Richard concurs and says he derives
tremendous satisfaction in being with
fellow resident veterans. He joined the
Army at age 16 in 1948, eventually be-
coming a combat engineer.
“The people truly make SpringRidge
special,” he said. “I especially love chat-
ting with other veterans.”
The social events offered at the com-
munity have been a great way for him to
connect with others. He and his wife,
Carol, are quite fond of the parties, spe-
cial events and celebrations.
Len, who moved to SpringRidge near-
ly six months ago with his wife, Lela, has
met his neighbors through activities
such as golfing and Wednesday trivia.
He’s even recruited a neighbor to join
him fly fishing.
“There are lots of activities offered at
the community, including a ukulele
group,” he said. “I’d been playing for two
years prior to moving to SpringRidge, so
it was wonderful to see the SpringRidge
Strummers on the calendar of activities.”
Veterans Day has a special meaning
for both Richard and Len. For Richard,
it’s a time of gratitude and reflection.
The annual observance reminds him of
his comrades who didn’t make it home
from war. Len believes the holiday
should be used to call attention to the
plight of current military personnel and
their families who may feel isolated as
enlistment numbers have declined
among the younger generations.
In addition to military-themed obser-
vances and programs for resident veter-
ans, SpringRidge at Charbonneau, which
offers independent and assisted living as
well as memory care services, frequently
hosts informational seminars for veter-
ans. Guests and prospective residents
are able to learn about the Department
of Veterans Affairs’ often overlooked
program, “Aid & Attendance.” A month-
ly tax-free benefit, “Aid & Attendance,”
provides care for veterans and surviving
spouses who require the regular atten-
dance of another person to assist in bath-
ing, meal preparation or other activities
of daily living. This benefit is also avail-
able to individuals who reside in assisted
living communities.
“We’re honored to have so many
brave men and women call SpringRidge
home,” said Executive Director Garth
Hallman. “We truly are indebted to the
‘Greatest Generation’ for our freedoms
and liberties. The camaraderie is not on-
ly evident among our resident-veterans,
but by the entire community who salute
their service.”
