18 THE CHARBONNEAU VILLAGER
Charbonneau
Men’s Club
By JOHN MCLAIN
CHARBONNEAU GOLF CLUB, INC. PRESIDENT
“Good luck” as the golf
season heats up
It’s a funny thing: the more I practice,
the luckier I get.
~ Arnold Palmer
Good luck! This phrase is often heard
on the Charbonneau golf course,
especially on the first
tee before a match play
event. Competitors
want to win the match,
but not at the expense
of the competitor’s
“bad luck.” Good
sportsmanship teaches
us it is better to win the match when
both players have good luck, than to
have bad luck determine the outcome.
So, we always say “Good luck” to the
other players on the first tee.
Good luck! Sometimes this phrase is
said during the course of play. Usually,
it is a whisper said to yourself as your
opponent attempts a shot that he saw
Bubba Watson once make; ball lies in
the pine straw, must hit it low under the
branches of the pine tree, bending
around the trunk of the big sequoia tree,
over the trap, and stop it on the green
before it goes into the water hazard.
Good luck indeed.
Good luck! Is what most members of
the Men’s Club believe they already
possess just because they are able to
show up for a round of golf at
Charbonneau with friends new and old.
The score matters, but less than the
feeling of accomplishment of having
completed the round without losing a
single golf ball. Found your ball
inbounds after it hit the patio chairs?
Good luck. Ball lands on the green after
hitting a rock in the water hazard?

March 2019
Good luck. Ball hits a sprinkler head in
the fairway and bounces over the trap
and onto the green? A good story to tell
at the 19th hole.
Good luck! For me good luck is
having such great volunteers on the
board and committees that organize
great social and golf events for the
Men’s Club members and their guests. I
am especially thankful to the growing
feeling of a community of golf at
Charbonneau with the three clubs
(Men’s Club, CWGA and Niners) who
are finding ways to be inclusive in
many of the social, educational and
golfing events throughout the year.
Now let’s all go out and play more golf.
March 19 marks the last day of
winter, and March 30 marks the first of
the Men’s Club regular game days on
Wednesdays and Saturdays. The board
of directors and the club’s many
committees have been working all
winter long to prepare for a new season
of golf. Upcoming events for the end of
winter and beginning of spring are:
