Get tax help at the library
and learn about America’s
founding writers
A happy March to all! Are you ready
for the lamb, now that we’ve fully
experienced the lion?
Here’s what’s
happening in March on
the adult side of the
Library:
■ Free Tax Help
continues this month,
each Saturday — the 2,
9, 16, 23 and 30 from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m. No reservations necessary,
but it may be crowded, so we suggest you
arrive early. For best results, don’t forget
to bring your 2017 tax return and
associated documents with you.
■ On Friday, March 1, at 6 p.m., our
First Friday Film program hoists itself
boldly over the parapet. This month, we’ll
be screening a dramatic film about the life
of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the
moon. If you can’t figure out which film
this is, give us a call at the library, and
we’ll quietly tell you! Free admission, and
we’ve even got snacks.
■ Beginning on Sunday, March 3 at 1:30
p.m., we’re hosting a new class: America’s
Founding Writers, 1600-1800. The class is
taught by Dr. Bill Thierfelder, emeritus,
Dowling College, New York.
The United States has always been a
rambunctious and divided nation — and
the writers featured in this course
represent (and explore) those divisions
from the Colonial period through the
American Revolution. Students will probe

through April 14 — no class March 17)
$30 for class series (all text materials
are included). Please sign up at the library
Reference Desk.
■ Do you know someone who would
like to brush up on English? Please tell
them about our new English
Conversation Group. Every Thursday
afternoon (March 7, 14, 21 and 28), from
1-2:30 p.m., participants can drop in to
learn and practice English in this free,
informal class. Speakers of any language
and any English comprehensive level are
welcome and no registration is required.
■ On Saturday, March 9, at 2 p.m., our
very popular BookNotes concert series
will take the stage. This time, we’re
showcasing The Hanson Family Singers.
The award-winning Hanson Family hails
from the Eugene, Oregon, area and have
been singing religious and cowboy music
nationwide to great acclaim. An
interesting mashup from an interesting
family — great to hear until the last
roundup!
■ On Tuesday, March 12, at 6 p.m., our
Great Books Discussion Group meets. Are
you interested in philosophy and the big
questions of life? Join us each month for a
roundtable discussion of how modern day
issues are reflected and illuminated by
the great Western classic books. This
month, we’ll be discussing “Thus Spoke
Zarathustra” by Friedrich Nietzsche. Call
or email us to join our Great Books
e-mailing list and receive monthly scans
of our readings.
■ On Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m.
(doors open at 5 p.m. — hint, hint), you
should check out the History Pub! The
Wilsonville Public Library Foundation,
the Wilsonville/Boones Ferry Historical
Society, and McMenamin’s have teamed
up to present monthly programs focusing

on Oregon’s rich history. Held at the
McMenamin’s Old Church (near Fred
Meyer). This month we’ll be
presenting “Red Tail Angels: Black
Fighter Pilots in WW II,” presented by Sig
Unander, Jr. Please join us for an
exploration of how the first black pilots to
see air combat blazed a trail of glory in
the frozen skies over Europe in the
darkest days of World War II. The
legendary “Tuskegee Airmen” fought
Nazi tyranny abroad, earning high honors
for valor. Their competence and
determination helped end segregation in
the armed forces and foreshadowed the
civil rights movement.
For the younger set we also host many
activities this month!
■ Play Group meets twice this month,
on Mondays, March 4 and 11 at 10 a.m.
Drop in anytime and let the kiddos play
with a variety of toys, as well as socialize
with the under-6 crowd. For children ages
birth to 6 with their grownups.
■ Toddler Time will also meet twice,
on Tuesdays, March 5 and 12 at 10 a.m.,
then again at 11 a.m. Join us for an
interactive program that includes songs,
parachute fun, bubbles, puppets and
stories for our youngest patrons. This
program is designed with even the most
active toddler in mind!
■ Baby Time will meet on the first two
Thursdays, March 7 and 14 at 11:30 a.m.
Moms, dads, grandmas and caregivers
join us for songs, rhymes and special
bonding time with your baby. Stay
afterward to play and chat with other
caregivers about all things baby!
■ Family Storytime now meets 3 days
per week! First on Tuesdays, March 5 and
12 at 6:30 p.m.; then again on Wednesdays,
March 6 and 13 at 10:30 a.m.; and then
finally on Thursdays, March 7 and 14 at
10:30 a.m. Bring the whole family for fun
with creative storytelling with stories,
songs and puppets!
■ On Wednesdays, March 6 and 20 at
1:30 p.m., there is fun to be had for kids in
3rd through 5th grades. If they’re looking
for something to do on Early Release
Days, how about introducing them to
some science fun? Bring them to the
Science Zone, and they’ll get hands-on
with exciting science experiments. Free,
and no sign-up is required.
■ On Thursday, March 14 at 3:30 p.m.,
we present K-2 Book Adventures. Join us
as we share some of our favorite classic
stories, books and authors through
interactive storytelling, puppetry and
other fun activities. For children in
kindergarten through 2nd grade.
■ It’s been 50 years since the Apollo XI
landed men on the moon. On Saturday,
March 23 at 1 p.m. please join us for a
public lecture about the Apollo Program
given by a staff member of the Evergreen
Air and Space Museum. Free and open to
all, until our Oak Room fills up.
■ On Wednesday, March 27, at 6:30
p.m., have your K-5th grader join us for
Lego Night. It will be a fun night to
construct, create and imagine with Lego!
Lego expert David Thornton from Canby
Bricks & Minifigs will be available to
provide cool tips.
And last but not least, here’s what’s
going on for teens!
■ Friday, March 15 at 4:30 p.m. The
Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is made up of
6th through 12th graders who meet to
hang out, eat and have fun. They help
choose books, music, and movies for the
library to buy, help make the teen space a
comfy and attractive place to hang out,
and plan events. If you’re interested in
helping, send us an email or call Brad at
503-570-1592, or just show up at our next
meeting. Meetings are generally at 4:30
p.m. on Teen Event nights.
■ Later that same day, at 6:30 p.m.
teens can come join us for St. Patrick
Shenanigans! What do the leprechauns
have in store for Wilsonville’s teens?
They can find out — if they dare!
Hope to see you all here at the library
this month! ■
