Blueberry Field Day
returns in July and
an open house
July 31
T
his year’s annual Communi-
ty Open House at the North
Willamette Research and
Extension Center (NWREC),
15210 Miley Road, Aurora — and just
across the road from Charbonneau’s
East Entrance — will be Wednesday,
July 31, from 4-7 p.m.
The NWREC Open House is the time
of year when the center opens up their
gates to the public and community to
showcase the latest technology in farm-
ing and food production. Research and
outreach faculty and staff from NWREC
will be on hand with displays, demon-
strations, and they explain their work
with hazelnuts, berry crops, vegetable
production, Christmas trees, nursery
and greenhouse production, pest man-
agement and small scale farming.
A special feature each year is the hay
wagon farm tours that depart every 45
minutes beginning at 4:15 p.m. Tractor
driving — always a very popular activi-
ty for some — will be available again
this year. OSU Master Gardeners will
be present to answer your home land-
scape and gardening questions. OSU
Family Food Educators will share tips
and ideas for proper food preservation
and canning methods —plus tasty
treats to sample!
The Open House is a fun and educa-
tional event for all ages. Special youth
activities are organized by the Master
Gardeners. And, you won’t want to miss
the berry tasting and comparing the lat-
est varieties being developed for con-
sumers.
An added feature for this year’s Com-
munity Open House will be an appear-
ance by OSU’s Benny Beaver — bring
the entire family to enjoy a beautiful
evening on the farm. For more informa-
tion, see NWREC’s website thttp://ore-
gonstate.edu/dept/NWREC.
