First, a brief review. The board consists of nine members, each of whom serves a staggered three- year term. That means that three board positions are open every spring. The election takes place leading up to and at the Annual Meeting in May. In the past, a nominating committee consisting of a current board member, a past-president of the association and a community member at-large, would interview all applicants and advance three of them. Those not advanced had the opportunity to have their names added to the ballot by securing the signatures of five Charbonneau residents attesting to their willingness to serve. With the recent changes adopted by the board, all applicants will have their name included on the ballot unless they are deemed not qualified by the nominating committee, which will still interview all applicants to ensure each understands the duties, responsibilities and time demands of serving and is not running simply because he/she has a particular “agenda” to advance. In addition to the change described above, the board adopted a more detailed role (i.e., job) description as well as printed information, entitled Information for Prospective Board of Directors Applicants, something that will probably need to be revised slightly from year to year. The goal is to providie those interested in serving with a better appreciation for what will be in store, should they be elected. In some past years, there have been plenty of candidates; in other years it has been necessary to “recruit” candidates. Other refinements in the election process have also been agreed upon, particularly the need for a more thorough orientation for new board members once their service has begun, and for board members to engage in continuing development activities.
