The theme for 2018 Earth Day is“ End Plastic Pollution.” For ways you can help, go to www. earthday. org.
Whether we are on the Charbonneau Golf Course or somewhere else, environmental consciousness toward Mother Earth should be a lifestyle. How are we at Charbonneau stewards of our environment? And what we, as golfers, can we do to make every day Earth Day?
Chris Bensel, golf pro here in Charbonneau, shared his insights as to what he and the Charbonneau Golf Club, Inc. Board of Directors are doing to promote earth-friendly maintenance techniques such as:
• Water Conservation by using river water rather than city water
• Updated turf management techniques
• Tree management
• Use of eco-friendly chemicals
• Recycling of leaves and limbs
• Recycling containers throughout the Golf Course
• Electric carts rather than gas carts
What can we do as individual golfers to be earth-friendly golfers?
• Replace divots by using the method or technique prescribed by your course guidelines
• Respect frost delays
• Recycle your own trash
• Observe cart path rules
The Niners contribute to the beautiful gardens in Charbonneau by maintaining a garden on Yellow # 6 throughout the year. Cari Hampton has spear-headed this project for the last few years. If you wish to volunteer your gardening skills, contact Cari at bookrepvhl @ comcast. net.
Chris Bensel also has a team of volunteers who do small maintenance projects on Tuesdays that help keep our course looking so great. If you would like to help, please contact Chris at the Pro Shop.

We are excited!! On April 10, we will be reviewing The Waiting by Cathy LaGrow. She has consented to join us for our discussion.
LaGrow lives in Tualatin and has been writing short stories and blogging; but this is her first book. It is a true story that her grandmother, Minka Disbrow, had kept a secret for 80 years. At age 17, Minka had been raped. Even though she loves her baby, she knows that society in the 1920s will not accept an unmarried mother; so she gives her up for adoption. Minka goes on to marry and have two children, but she secretly tries to find out about her little girl. She thinks about her every day. LaGrow does a wonderful job of incorporating world events into this story of yearnings and faith in prayer. It isn ' t until the baby( she named Betty Jane has health problems that Betty Jane ' s son starts looking for his mother’ s birth mother. The results of this search ends with an amazing unity of two families. It is so special to meet the author and get her personal story. We welcome visitors – so hope to see you on April 10.
Our second read this month, The Bone Garden, also takes you back in time. Tess Gerritsen is a physician who writes medical mysteries. Julia, newly divorced, buys an very old house in Boston. When clearing the backyard for a garden, she discovers human bones that reach back to an unsolved murder in the 1800s. This makes the news, and she hears from a descendant of the original owner who says he has letters and papers that relate to the story. What follows is a touching love story and the development of a medical procedure that is widely promoted today to prohibit the passing of germs- Wash Your Hands! You will learn much about the early practice of medicine and realize how far we have come today. Please join us on April 24. Everyone gets to be involved in the discussions that are led by one of our members. We meet monthly on the second and fourth Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 pm at the Charbonneau Clubhouse.
