( their version of sausages), sosatie( traditional lamb skewers) and, thanks to Roelf, the best beef tenderloin imaginable.
When we weren’ t gathered around the braai, we dined like kings on South African lamb, fresh crayfish( rock lobster), and amazing beef. Eating out in South Africa will spoil the most refined diners: the food is amazing, and just about as cheap as eating at home. While many restaurants are influenced by European cuisine, there is a move toward creating dishes with modern twists on traditional South African fare, such at bobotie, a meatloaf with raisins and egg, and potjiekos, a stew named for the three-legged cast iron pot in which it is cooked.

Among South Africa’ s amazing experiences, the one that stood out for me was the safari. In the northeast part of this fabulous country is Kruger National Park. Africa, and offers unrivalled Big Five game viewing. The Big Five( lion, leopard, Cape buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros) are only a few of the amazing animals, birds, insects, and plants we experienced in this place.
Dotting the landscape around the park are numerous private game reserves. The reserves increase the area for animals to roam, and offer an unbelievable variety of opportunities for accommodations in the midst of this wild landscape. We were fortunate to go to Singita in Sabi Sands, where we enjoyed five days of safari! The experience of sitting within reaching distance of an African lion or elephant is spine-tingling. After the long flight from Johannesburg to Winnipeg, each of us agreed that we couldn’ t wait until the day we could return to South Africa. We were excited by the wines; we embraced a culture of change; and we were each just a little changed by the dust on the soles of our feet.
