Congratulations to Michael Edwards on his recent graduating from Soulsville Charter School in Memphis, Tennessee! Since 2012, four Soulsville students have attended the Alzar School, with another expected to join us this fall. Michael, known by his peers as MJ, spent his Spring 2016 semester at the Alzar School. As an applicant, Michael stood out because he expressed an understanding of the program and his desire to seek out a challenge as a way to improve himself.
“I want to be an Alzar Student because I see a tremendous, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to not only to travel out of my city and country for school, but to experience another part of myself that I never have, to grow closer to my peers and mentors, to experience living in nature, and to improve my resilience through challenging tasks. I know this program will prepare me with the skills and tools necessary for success in college, as well as essential life skills.”
The experiences and skills Michael gained at the Alzar School have propelled him forward in life. “Alzar was truly an eye-opener for me,” Michael reflects. He attests that the diversity of the Alzar School helped him understand that people from various walks of life have both differences and similarities.
This fall, Michael will be attending Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. His plan is to study engineering at the small liberal arts college for three years and then transfer to the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University for a remaining two years. Upon completion of this 3-2 program, Michael will receive a Bowdoin Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and a Bachelor's of Science degree in engineering. Michael will also be playing golf while at Bowdoin.
We are so proud of Michael, his growth and ambition. Congratulations to Michael and all of our graduating alumni who are off to accomplish amazing things in college and beyond.
