The new 64-bed hospital will include 48
private rooms and 16 much-needed
pediatric ICU beds, four more than what is
currently offered at Scott & White. A
children’s hospital already exists within Scott
& White Hospital - Temple, and its
specialists and resources have helped restore
health for many children. However, it’s clear
that offering additional pediatric specialty
care is necessary. Due in part to the
exploding population growth in Texas, there
are ever more children in need of medical
expertise and care to help them heal from
injuries or to diagnose and treat diseases.
The main hospital will retain its Level

III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),
which is ranked nationwide among the top
3 percent for survival rates. All other
pediatric inpatient and outpatient care will
move to the new Children’s Hospital
campus, which will serve newborns and
adolescents up to age 18.
The new Children’s Hospital campus
will offer a comprehensive range of pediatric
specialty care services in a child-focused
environment. It also will be the primary
academic setting for the Department of
Pediatrics at the Texas A&M Health Science
Center College of Medicine, and will serve
as the principal teaching facility for the
pediatric residency program, as well as a
fertile ground for research activities.
