Age of DISCOVERY Finding treatments and cures so patients can live better lives Scott & White has an impressive history of conducting vital medical research. It continues to pursue its goal of unraveling the mystery of disease, along with a collaborative research effort with Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. The promise of research is to improve the lives of many people who suffer. Areas of inquiry begin with critical observation, the exchange of ideas and necessary funding. I ts promise has never been more important. Medical research has eradicated communicable and infectious diseases of generations past, and saved populations from being destroyed. The discovery of the polio vaccine by Jonas Salk in the 1950s is one such example of how a significant breakthrough made a profound difference for populations across the globe. Other significant advances have been made in the areas of cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and more. But now, in the Information Age, the opportunity is even greater, as the nation struggles with rising rates of preventable, chronic diseases. Genetic and acute diseases are broad territories for investigation as well. The success of research efforts relies upon dialogue between clinicians, as well as between patients and caregivers, to ultimately benefit people worldwide through discoveries that have the potential to change millions of lives. Scott & White scientists employ expertise and years of experience, along with interdisciplinary collaboration, to navigate the research realm in a focused Front to back: Research scientist Dr. Josh Combs and Dr. Jung-Hee Woo, director of the Cancer Research Institute. 4 THE CATALYST Spring 10 | sw.org
