Board Member Spotlight continued of more than 50 percent. Occupations in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (engineers, computer scientists, physical scientists) are expected to increase by more than 30 percent by 2016. With Texas experiencing huge growth in population and emerging industries, it’s important that the medical community serve the people. We’re seeing a growing need for excellent healthcare in our rural areas. Scott & White excels in expanding and broadening horizons, and identifying geographic areas in which to provide that care. Having grown up in a rural county, I have always realized how important it is that medical care is provided to people who might not have it otherwise. When I got a call from Ross McKnight [a member of the Scott & White Healthcare board of trustees] and Drayton McLane [chairman of the board] asking me to serve on the board, it allowed me the opportunity to continue my enthusiasm for being involved in healthcare. I want Texans to receive the most personalized, highest-quality and most comprehensive care they can possibly receive. Scott & White is led by physicians who rose to the occasion during the Fort Hood disaster with utmost professionalism, while providing comprehensive care. Scott & White was truly prepared and put everything in motion. The success for patient care and recovery was overwhelming. Scott & White’s response to this terrible tragedy showed that it is a well-greased wheel that works. Generosity of spirit As parents, Rick and I hope we’ve been good examples to our children. We’ve taught them that we accomplish more together than we do alone. Rick is blessed with the gift of leadership to give back to the public, and our children have seen him in that capacity. As I travel around the strong state of Texas, I never fail to be overwhelmed by the generosity and spirit of cooperation when people work to overcome challenges. Texans pull together in the wake of a disaster, whether at Fort Hood or during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I’ve seen it in the rebuilding effort for the Governor’s Mansion, too, from the incarcerated person who sent in a few dollars to the most generous donors. It has been a community coming together to work for the common cause of restoring a great old home to its grandeur, with historical integrity. Staying balanced My faith helps to keep me centered. I don’t know where I’d be without it. Every day I make up my mind to have a good day and try to keep a positive attitude and make the right decisions. That’s all you can do. It’s hard to accept sometimes, but I really believe that everything works out the way it’s supposed to. And it helps me to remember what Winston Churchill once said: “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” ■ Texas' First Lady Anita Perry greets Scott & White Nursing Director Calvinette RichardsonMoore, RN, MSN. 20 THE CATALYST Spring 10 | sw.org
