A continued focus on
patient-centered care
T
he new healthcare bill signed into law by President Barack Obama will
expand access to healthcare for literally tens of millions of Americans. What
a challenge and what an opportunity!
The complexity of this legislation is vast. It is comprehensive and hopes to create
opportunities in three general areas: access to care, system redesign and financial
support. In each of these areas, there are many opportunities for Scott & White. We
have been fortunate to be recognized in the last few years as a unique integrated system
that provides high-quality and lower-cost care throughout an array of disease
management processes. Our structure is consistent with the description of an
Accountable Care Organization, which this legislation hopes to promote as we
transform healthcare in the United States.
The high current costs of healthcare and the rate of increase of those costs are not
sustainable. Moreover, the quality of care provided for the price—50 percent per capita
greater than any other country—is not what any of us want. And so we have a real
chance over the next decade to create higher quality, more efficient, more accessible,
innovative health care. This effort will be a marathon, not a sprint. It will be a
meticulous, challenging, complex process, but one that is important for the future of all
our citizens. Putting the patient at the center of the effort and focusing our initiatives
on patient care are what Scott & White is all about.
We know we must change, and we will change for the better on behalf of
our patients.
In this issue of THE CATALYST, you will learn about many things that we are
currently doing to benefit our patients and provide hope for the future. You also will be
introduced to our newest trustee, Texas’ First Lady Anita Perry, who has, in her short
tenure with Scott & White, already provided insight and observations that have been
significant for our great organization. I hope you enjoy the Spring 2010 issue.
