The Catalyst Issue 5 | Winter 2010 | Page 2

As 2010 begins, we reflect and remember NANCY L. BIRDWELL Chief Development Officer PETER BRUMLEVE Chief Strategy and Marketing Officer HOLLY HALLEN Associate Executive Director, Division of Strategy, Marketing and Communications AMY PERKINS Director, Development Marketing and Annual Giving KERRI WHITE Consultant and Project Manager PATRICIA BRENNAN Managing Editor JAN MCINROY Copyeditor T he end of 2009 and the tragic events at Fort Hood give us pause to remember and thank the brave men and women who serve our country. Several of the wounded soldiers were cared for at Scott & White. I am extremely proud of the care that was given to them. And I salute the entire Scott & White family, who worked diligently to ensure that existing patients’ care remained undisturbed during this time. In this issue, you’ll hear from leaders on the front lines— from surgery, support services, the emergency room, the operating room and other areas—telling their own stories of how their teams came together in a united front. I’m also proud of the incredible strides we’re making in clinical care and research. This includes the trauma care service that serves thousands of Central Texans, the clinicians waging war against kidney disease, the highly specialized care for fragile infants and more. It’s especially moving to hear the stories of patients, many of them young, who persevere and display the kind of strength each of us should summon when the going gets tough. There are many heroes among us. We’re thankful for each of them. The best to you and your families in 2010. REBECCA MCCOY GARY L.
