AFFINITY IN ACTION Individuals and organizations dedicated to supporting Scott & White Unique Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. Unique Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. (UPI), is a company that gives back. Over the past three years, Scott & White Healthcare has been the recipient of donations totaling more than $300,000 from the pharmacy to boost Scott & White’s efforts to help prevent premature births. is a specialty pharmacy known as a compounding pharmacy, which serves hospitals across the United States. It provides a unique set of services, such as offering new, discontinued, back-ordered or otherwise unavailable drugs to meet specific patients’ needs, as ordered by a physician. UPI provides IV bags and a medication called Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate for Scott & White patients who are at high risk for delivering their babies prematurely. While other treatment options are available for these patients, some of them require the highly specialized medication offered by UPI. ”We know that our gifts allow Scott & White to help its patients fulfill their dreams of becoming parents,” says Dan Volney, chairman and chief executive officer of UPI. “We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to help people get care from Scott & White.” UPI Working together for full-term pregnancies Premature births are a leading cause of neonatal death in the United States and development problems for children as they get older. Because of UPI’s generous donation, women receiving prenatal care at Scott & White who might benefit from this drug will be able to get it, regardless of their ability to pay. “Compounding pharmacies, such as UPI, are currently the only resource for Hydroxyprogesterone Caproate. Because Scott & White is a good partner, we wanted to help them make this available to all high-risk patients,” says UPI President and Chief Operating Officer Travis Leeah. 26 THE CATALYST Fall 09 | sw.org “With partners like UPI ready and willing to step forward, we can assure that fewer babies are born with the problems associated with prematurity,” says Scott & White Chief Development Officer Nancy Birdwell. “We feel strongly about the importance of giving back to our community and welcome the opportunity to help Scott & White help others,” says Mr. Volney. “It’s really rewarding to run into a patient and her baby, and see that something UPI made was able to help the pregnancy go to full term,” he says. “Almost all of us who work here know someone who has fought the risk of earlyterm pregnancy, and it makes us especially proud of what we do on a daily basis.” A partnership for good UPI’s relationship with Scott & White is now in its eighth year and continues to strengthen with time. “We believe in Scott & White’s mission and vision, and are so pleased we’re able to support their efforts with our gifts—and with the service we provide,” says Mr. Volney. “UPI provides hospitals with pharmaceuticals that have been prepared under optimum conditions to assure high quality.
