It’s caused by a weak sphincter muscle between the stomach and the esophagus, which allows stomach acid to splash back, or “reflux” into the esophagus. Patients with GERD, a chronic, often progressive condition, usually take medication to curtail its symptoms, which include frequent heartburn and coughing. They usually have to watch their diets to avoid its triggers, too, and are at increased risk of esophageal cancer. Until recently, the only permanent solution for GERD sufferers was surgery. Now, there is another, better alternative for many patients—a minimally invasive procedure called LINX. F.
