Nothing is as important as the health of our children. When a child becomes seriously ill their entire family is impacted. Adding to the stress for many Central Texas families was the necessity to leave a supportive home environment often for a prolonged period to find the right care in larger urban areas. According to a 2010 study, 700 families travelled outside Bell County for specialty care. Today that has changed. Now that same level of excellence and expertise in pediatric specialty care is available to families close to home. Since the McLane Children’s Hospital opened in 2011 and the pediatric clinics expanded throughout the region, the volume of care has exceeded all projections. “We’re so pleased to help more families with the care their children need by making care available closer to them,” says John Boyd III, MD, president and chief medical officer of McLane Children’s. He explains that the pent-up demand for pediatric specialty care during the first year the hospital was open—which Dr. Boyd calls “wildly successful”—resulted in a 20 percent increase in admissions, more than doubling the leadership’
