Supporting the Bone and Joint Institute As plans for promoting the new Bone and Joint Institute began to develop earlier this year , Ms . Culp brainstormed about ways to appeal to this new audience . A perfect kickoff event soon took shape : the Fiesta of Giving , which was held at the home of Sharron and Matt Davis , MD , director of trauma services and trauma surgeon , on Cinco de Mayo ( May 5 ) to highlight the trauma and orthopaedic programs . More than 250 guests gathered to celebrate both the trauma and orthopaedic programs and raise funds for the new Bone and Joint Institute . ( See page 18 for more information on the new Bone and Joint Institute .)
Circle of Giving co-chairs Christine Rahm , wife of Scott & White orthopaedic surgeon Mark Rahm , MD , and Melissa Bohannon , wife of Scott & White vascular surgeon W . Todd Bohannon , MD , shepherded the initial Circle of Giving committee to launch this inaugural event . Mrs . Rahm says , “ We wanted to support the new Bone and Joint Institute . At the same time , we want to foster a culture of philanthropy throughout our community , who may not need a lot of healthcare intervention now , but possibly will later in life , or may need to help their parents with their own health needs .”
The Fiesta of Giving event exceeded the goal of $ 50,000 to purchase a mobile X-ray machine that will allow adults and children to have imaging performed in the comfort of their own patient room , without making a trip to the Radiology Department . The new equipment provides high-resolution images while reducing radiation exposure . “ One of our primary goals is to ensure that our efforts impact the community in a positive way , so we were pleased to be able to purchase the OrthoScan Mobile device ,” says Mrs . Bohannon . “ The Fiesta of Giving event became even more meaningful when we heard from patients who had experienced traumatic injuries .” ( See the Spring 2011 issue of THE CATALYST to learn more about patient Janet Karr ’ s story .)
Gifts of all sizes make a difference , particularly when combined at an enthusiastic event , such as the Fiesta of Giving . Guests were asked to financially commit at levels of $ 21 , $ 42 , $ 84 a month , equaling $ 250 , $ 500 , and $ 1,000 annually . The Circle of Giving committee hopes to inspire an ever expanding interest in philanthropy and a lifelong affinity for Scott & White in its members . Scott & White remains dedicated to providing excellent healthcare right here to our friends and families , and relies on collaboration and partnerships with the community to continue to do so . The Circle of Giving is one example of how this joint effort can provide real and exciting results that will positively affect healthcare in Central Texas .
Mrs . Rahm says , “ We ’ re trying to look past our immediate needs . We ’ ll see the fruits of our labor today and into the future — by helping our own parents now , and our children , too .” Life definitely comes full circle . n
