FORWARD MOMENTUM $3.5 million grant funds innovative cancer research and expands the pediatric treatment center at the new Children’s Hospital at Scott & White In a gesture that is as promising as it is generous, an anonymous donor has provided the means to advance the future of cancer treatment at Scott & White Healthcare. The donor's bigheartedness, inspired by the impressive work of the Scott & White Cancer Research Institute and the new Children’s Hospital at Scott & White that will open this fall, is matched by the dedication of caregivers to ease the suffering of patients and families affected by cancer. 26 THE CATALYST Spring 11 | www.sw.org T he gift of $3.5 million is a follow-up to the original $2 million gift that helped create Dr. Art Frankel’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) labs at the Scott & White Cancer Research Institute. The two recent gifts create a unique research system that can move proposed therapies from the scientific bench to the bedside of patients more quickly. The current gifts are directed toward two priorities to help achieve this goal: advancing basic research to the clinical-trial stage and helping even more patients at the Children’s Hospital at Scott & White by doubling the size of the cancer treatment area. “Due to philanthropy, all the necessary pieces of the puzzle are in place to make this happen at Scott & White,” says Alfred B.
