A period of
growth and
a new role
F
or the past 25 years, I have been fortunate to be a part of a great organization
delivering the highest level of healthcare through a compassionate, engaging,
coordinating, and comprehensive model. While that concept has not changed
over the past quarter century, what has changed is expectations—from our patients, our
payers, our communities, and our staff.
I became acutely aware of this paradigm shift in expectations when I was selected to
lead Scott & White Healthcare in 2000. Up to that point, Scott & White operated as four
separate organizations. Our visionary leadership recognized that divergent strategies were
not sustainable and effectively merged the direction of our organizations. Over the next five
years, we thoughtfully put in place a team that would help us create our vision, enhance
our mission, and define what was the best evolutionary strategy for Scott & White.
The past five years of my decade as CEO have involved implementing a remarkable
growth strategy. Our challenge now, as we deliver medical care over a 29,000-square-mile
region of Central Texas, is to maintain the level of excellence that Scott & White is
known for, and to do so while being fiscally responsible in the context of rapid external
and internal change.
That level of excellence is underscored through philanthropy.
Philanthropic donations enable our patients to be treated with the best equipment, in
topflight facilities, leveraging leading medical techniques. Those committed individuals
who donate to Scott & White help us maintain our commitment to our patients,
allowing us to provide the best care, the best outcomes, and the betterment of a
healthy community.
Philanthropy will allow us to continue our expansive research and education mission
when federal and state support is being drastically challenged. Access to young learners
at all levels, innovation and challenging new therapies and technologies, and new
approaches to population care will encourage us to achieve our vision of being the most
Trusted and the most Valued name in American Healthcare.
As I begin my new role as president of the Scott & White Healthcare Foundation,
I want to thank every one of you for playing such an important role in what we do.
I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and know we have many more successes
awaiting us.
