THE James Morrison Quintet replaces the Canadian Brass in
the feature concert at the Fitter’s Workshop of the Canberra
International Music Festival on Saturday, April 29, 2017.
The Festival’s artistic director Roland Peelman said: “We are
sorry for our patrons and supporters who were looking forward to
the Canadian Brass concert, but the circumstances are completely
beyond our control.
“ However, we are delighted to welcome the James Morrison
Quintet at the festival.
“Not only has he adjusted his schedule to make this possible, we can
hear him with his Quintet, a line-up of talent that is rarely seen with
James (in picture) at the heart of it.
“He is a true force of nature, one of the all-time great brass players.”
The Festival is billed as “a vibrant fusion of thought-provoking
conversation, some culinary adventures on the side, and over 20
expertly curated concerts with charismatic performers from around
the globe”.
It takes place from April 27 to May 7, 2017. n
MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS
Discretionary powers opposed
FECCA opposes any proposal to allow
for broad, discretionary ministerial
powers to review, restrict or cancel
visas for people based on membership
of a particular community.
FECCA chairman Joe Caputo
said: ‘The expansion of ministerial
discretion to allow a visa to be refused
or revoked on the basis of nationality
or residency threatens the integrity of
our immigration system.’
FECCA is concerned about the
powers to be granted to the Minister
for Immigration and Border Protection
in proposed amendments to the
Migration Act that allow the minister
to “identify any group of people based
on a shared common characteristic or
circumstance,” and review their visa
status. n
FECCA’s submission to the House of
Representatives standing committee
on employment, edscation and training
inquiry, highlighted the need for a
diverse workforce to cater for the needs
of Australia’s growing multicultural
workforce.
The submission focused on existing
barriers for people from CALD
backgrounds to enter the workforce
including the difficulties in having
overseas qualifications recognised and
issues faced by people on temporary
visas with the skills in demand. n
