Dealing with Trump is not about politics

AT PRESSTIME, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull was facing a dilemma that would cast perceptions about his leadership as seen not only by Australians but also by people around the world.
It was about dealing with new kid on the block, US President Donald Trump.
Nothing earth-shaking, really. But it was enough to suggest a perception that the Prime Minister was choosing to be diplomatic and pragmatic with the new US President.
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten thought the PM should have been strong for the world to see, never mind being diplomatic.
At the heart of the matter were two issues: The first was Trump’ s decision to ban immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.
The second issue was a deal struck by Turnbull to send some asylum-seekers from Australia to the United States.
The issues appeared to have converged with dramatic impact:
Although leaders from the Free World led by United Kingdom’ s Boris Johnson and Germany’ s Angela Merkel openly voiced strong opposition to Trump’ s ban, Turnbull decided to keep silent.
Further, Trump put a damper on the asylum-seek deal with a veiled attempt to ditch the arrangement.
Thus it was the perception that the purpose of Turnbull’ s silence was not to trigger Trump into actually reneging on the deal.
That opened the gate for Shorten to jump on Turnbull for appearing to fail in securing the asylum-seeker deal and not showing enough gumption to blast Trump’ s immigration ban.
Turnbull’ s mistake, possibly, could be not taking into account that Trump was not a politician. In boxing terms, Don’ s a brawler.
On the other hand, the politician Turnbull is more of an artist dancing to the rhythm of time.
Dealing with Trump would be like jumping into a boxing ring with a big puncher and asking for the next dance.
Perception is everything. Shorten must be in stitches. • ~ JAIME K PIMENTEL, Editor

I like the aspect of Valentine’ s Day that honours love and encourages people to demonstrate and celebrate their feeling.
I don’ t like the focus on material things like flowers and teddy bears though.•
