artworks, specialising in papercut.
He has had exhibits in different
countries as well as concerts
promoting Filipino culture. ‘Bangs
and Garp’ cartoon strip is a
product of his interpretations of
the different personalities such as
politicians and celebrities, and
their take on Filipino way of life.
Bangs, short for ‘bangaw’, is the
bigger specie of the housefly.
Garp is short for ‘garapata’ or flea
found in every nook and corner.

says diva Miss Powers

MISS Powers, the headline-grabbing
diva from Australia, will be heading to
the Philippines this month for a series
of shows and appearances in Manila
from June 19-28.
Andrew Mark Baris, or better known
as the loveable Miss Powers, is an
accomplished jazz dancer, Zumba and
ballroom instructor.
The talented singer-songwriter-
choreographer shot to fame last
October with an unforgettable audition
on the X Factor Australia reality show.
Miss Powers opened up with a jaw-
dropping split before singing the James
Brown cover “It’s A Man’s World”, to
the delight of celebrity judges Adam
Lambert, Guy Sebastian and Iggy
Azalea.

The X Factor performance soon went
viral globally, reaching fans across the
UK, Middle East, North America and
Asia, attracted more than a million
views and grabbed the attention of the
LGBT community.
Miss Powers got as far as the three-
seat challenge and placed in the Top 24,
barely missing out on a place in the Top
12 finals.
Now, Miss Powers is ready to bring
her extraordinary talents to the
Philippines.
“I am returning to my native country
with a purpose,” Miss Powers said.
. “My journey has been like a
rollercoaster. Australia has been great
for me and I cannot thank everyone
enough.
“I look forward to seeing my family and
connecting with my supporters.” n

Knights induct four new members
FOUR new members were inducted to the
Canberra chapter of the Order of the Knights of
Rizal at a ritual in Gunghalin’s Birralee Scout
Hall on Sunday, May 14, 2017.
They were Daggy Villaluna, Ricky Rosaleĵos,
Henry Sebastian, and Hem Chandra.
Presiding over the induction were Canberra
chapter grand officer Ric de Vera and Sydney
chapter’s regional commander Cesar Bartolome,
both of whom drove down from Sydney.
Canberra members present were Ariel
Pattugalan, Ian Bull, and Normal Kalagayan.
Also present from the Sydney chapter was Fiel
Santos.
“We will soon have a floral offering at the
Philippine Embassy compound in Canberra on

In his speech, Bartolome said in part: “The
OKOR is no ordinary fraternity, association or
club. It is a creation of the law. The authors and
proponents of RA646 believe that if the purpose
there of are faithfully and effectively carried out.
“Social discipline, civic virtues, and love of
justice will be fostered, promoted, and enhanced
in this country, and that the Knights of Rizal as
chartered entity is the most convenient
instrumentality by which these desirable ends

Plea for
protection
of temp
workers
LANGUAGE implying that foreign
workers were taking Australian jobs
was unhelpful, according to Joe
Caputo, chairman of the Federation
of the Ethnic Communities Council
of Australia (FECCA) recently.
Caputo has called on the
Government to ensure that migrant
workers coming to Australia under
the new temporary visa scheme will
be protected from exploitation
