Empowering Futures: How SMEs can shape tomorrow’ s workforce
New College Swindon is calling on local businesses to help shape the future of the region’ s workforce through a dynamic new work experience initiative. Spearheaded by Rachel Gear, newly appointed Head of Careers & Employability, the programme aims to connect students with meaningful opportunities that build confidence, skills, and career direction, while offering businesses a chance to engage with emerging talent.
Rachel explains,“ When employers and young people come together, the results can be transformational. Students gain clarity and confidence, while businesses benefit from fresh perspectives and potential future hires. It’ s a win-win- and a powerful way to level the playing field for those with fewer opportunities.”
Flexible opportunities for every business Whether you’ re a sole trader or a growing SME, there are multiple ways to get involved:
• Virtual work experience
• Site visits and tours
• Taster days
• Short placements( 2 – 3 days or 1 – 2 weeks)
• Extended placements for T-Level students These options allow businesses to support students in a way that suits their capacity, while still making a meaningful impact.
Spotlight on T-Levels: Deeper engagement, greater impact T-Level students typically undertake longer placements- typically around 45 days- giving them hands-on experience in sectors aligned with their studies. These learners are often ready to contribute meaningfully to your business and may progress into degree apprenticeships, full-time roles, or higher education.
Real-world learning: Learning through doing New College Swindon is also keen to work with employers on set projects, allowing students to tackle real-world challenges such as:
• Business students creating a marketing plan for a local start-up
• IT students building a prototype website for a community organisation
• Engineering students designing a simple product improvement or sustainability solution
• Health and social care students developing a wellbeing initiative for care home residents.
These projects are ideal for businesses unable to offer full placements but still keen to engage with young talent.
Diverse talent, inclusive workplaces Offering work placements to SEND( Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) learners is a powerful way for businesses to demonstrate their commitment to inclusion and equality. These opportunities help break down barriers to employment, allowing young people with diverse needs to develop confidence, skills, and independence in a supportive environment. This not only supports diverse talent but also reflects a commitment to equality and social responsibility.
Why it matters for SMEs In an era of rapid technological change- especially with AI reshaping industries- young people bring digital fluency, creativity, and adaptability. Engaging with them now helps future-proof your workforce and strengthens your business’ s community ties.
Matt Butcher, Vice Principal for Commercial, Skills and Partnerships at New College Swindon, adds,
“ Students undertaking work experience is vital at New College Swindon. These opportunities allow them to gain a vast range of real-world experience, which is essential for their development and future success. It’ s fantastic to see local employers stepping up to support this journey.”
Get involved With a renewed focus on employer engagement, Rachel is keen to hear from SMEs across the Swindon & Wiltshire region.“ Whether you can offer two hours or two weeks, your involvement makes a real difference,” she says.
