TALKING RUBBISH: Is your business prepared for DEFRA’ s Simpler Recycling legislation?
Workplace recycling is changing for most businesses across England. From 31st March 2025, DEFRA’ s‘ Simpler Recycling’ legislation will come into effect, standardising the collection of dry recyclable waste across local councils.
In practice, businesses and non-domestic premises with ten or more full-time employees will be the first required to sort their waste into four separate streams: general waste, food waste, paper and card, and dry mixed recycling. Fail to comply and your business could be issued a notice and penalty fine from the Environment Agency – so it’ s best to get ahead and ensure your workplace recycling stations are all up to date.
How can my business prepare for Simpler Recycling? GET IN TOUCH WITH YOUR WASTE COLLECTOR Your business must arrange to have the correct set of recyclable waste collected. This may mean reaching out to your waste collector to communicate any changes that have been made to your workplace’ s waste streams to comply with the new legislation.
COMPLETE A WASTE AUDIT Does your workplace offer separate bins for glass, and one for food and drinks cans? If so, it’ s time to scale back and find a bin that can hold all your dry mixed recycling. The most efficient solution would be to install recycling stations with four separate apertures to accommodate general waste and recyclable waste as required by the Simpler Recycling reforms.
LABEL YOUR WASTE STREAMS CLEARLY Clear, WRAP-compliant bin signage and appropriate apertures for each waste stream will encourage staff and customers alike to recycle correctly and quickly adapt to the changes ahead.
