THE DREAM TEAM
Effective teams need work
The reality is that great teams rarely just ‘ happen ’. Like a marriage , they aren ’ t always plain sailing and , more often than not , require work .
As a business , this can be a daunting path to navigate and a framework to map out this journey can prove invaluable .
In recent years , we have referred to the principles of Patrick Lencioni ’ s Five Dysfunctions of a Team in helping us to : build trust between our team , work through conflict , ensure commitment to our decisions , establish accountability , and focus on collective results .
This approach was particularly beneficial following the revamp of our board of directors . Whilst some members had been on the board for many years , others were newly promoted , and some new to the business . This diversity not only provided varying perspectives but also potential for conflict – something we have learned not to be afraid of .
We call this “ becoming comfortable with the uncomfortable .”
This sentiment has since been applied throughout Excalibur . We place a huge emphasis on our culture ; indeed , one core company value is being a ‘ personal ’ organisation . We ’ re immensely proud of the highly engaged workplace that this has created . As we have learned , however , there is a risk of inadvertently creating a culture of ‘ niceness .’ While this may seem innocuous , this was something that prevented us from holding each other accountable .
Identifying this weakness allowed us to gain insight into each other ’ s perspectives and foster stronger relationships across our team . This collective respect has enabled honest and challenging conversations early on . With this openness and mutual respect , better outcomes have emerged - for both our team and our business .
