Wiltshire business receives inaugural government award for export success
Westbury-based firm Scanning Pens has been announced as one of the first-ever recipients of the Made in the UK , Sold to the World Awards .
The new award scheme set up by The Department for Business and Trade recognises the fantastic international trading achievements of SMEs which are helping to grow the UK economy .
Exporters support jobs , pay higher wages and help deliver on the government ’ s priority to grow our economy . The Made in the UK , Sold to the World Awards are designed to highlight and celebrate the vital contribution small businesses make to the UK .
Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch , said , “ We ’ re proud of our British exporters and these Awards rightly highlight some fantastic businesses punching above their weight and selling UK-made products around the world . I hope they serve as inspiration to others looking to get onto the exporting ladder .”
The winning businesses were drawn from seven sectors : consumer goods , education , agriculture , food and drink , creative , financial and professional services , digital and manufacturing .
Scanning Pens won the education award . The company promotes and distributes the most innovative , award-winning assistive reading technology on the market . Its pens provide portable text-to-speech scanners which empower young and adult readers by giving them the tool to instantly access printed text anywhere . The assistive technology is at the heart of the dyslexia and special needs communities and is used daily by thousands of schools , workplaces and prisons . Scanning Pens export to over 100 countries , including Australia , Canada , United States , Asia and Europe .
Jack Churchill , Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer , Scanning Pens , said , “ Scanning Pens couldn ’ t be prouder to be taking home an award for the education category . Co-Founders Jack Churchill and Toby Sutton were both awarded OBEs in the New Year ’ s Honours List 2023 for services to international trade and to people with special educational needs and disabilities . In 2021 , the business received the Queen ’ s Award for Enterprise .

A NEW MAYOR FOR SALISBURY
Salisbury City Council has announced the election of Councillor Mr Atiqul Hoque as the 762nd The Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Salisbury .
The event on Saturday 13th May , was attended by over 200 Civic Dignitaries including Mayors from neighbouring towns and cities , who witnessed the handover of the Mayoral Chain from Cllr Tom Corbin to Cllr Atiqul Hoque .
Cllr Atiqul Hoque said , “ The people of Salisbury have made history by choosing their first British Bangladeshi Muslim Mayor which simply demonstrates how Salisbury has become more diverse and welcoming . I ’ m hopeful my mayorship will encourage others to come forward and engage with Salisbury City Council .
“ Salisbury has been through some tough times recently , from the Novichok incident to the pandemic , and now the time has come for us to put all of this behind us . I hope to promote what our beautiful medieval city has to offer ; I will stand alongside businesses and help our high street flourish .”
