WHAT DOES ‘ GOOD ’ REALLY LOOK LIKE ?

By Paul Holmes , Founder of PCH Business Consultants
Recently after watching the Coronation proceedings , I was drawn into a conversation about how King Charles III should define his role as monarch , to differentiate him from his mother and establish what ‘ good ’ now looks like as the leader of the nation and the Commonwealth .
This led on to a more general discussion about how any leader defines their expectations and how important it is those expectations are clear and effectively communicated .
This has come up a number of times with clients , where members of a team were not meeting the expectations of a business owner .
As a result , the owner can feel unable to step back from the running of the business and can get even more actively involved , which fundamentally goes against the principle of ‘ if you want to grow your business you need to design it to run without you ’.
To avoid this , business functions need to be defined and the roles and responsibilities created .
Expecting your team to be able to randomly interpret their roles and meet your expectations without the clarification
of what ‘ good ’ looks like , is , to say the least , challenging .
What you as the owner consider you would do in the role , might mean that an employee appears not to go far enough , is not fast enough or cannot operate quite to the standard you want them to be , leading to disappointment and frustration for everyone concerned .
In these cases I ask a series of questions which include :
• “ Does the individual have an accurate job description that properly reflects the role ” – often the answer is “ no probably not !”
• “ Have you defined objectives and targets for the employee ?” – and this kind of answer is common “ no not specifically but they know what they need to do surely !” Do they ? Do they really ?
• “ Have you discussed your expectations with
the employee , communicated the standards and performance expected , provided constructive feedback and appropriate training ?” – often the answer is “ No probably not ”
If you want your team to be able to perform well when you are not present , then you have to define what they need to do , demonstrate what ‘ good ’ looks like , define clear expectations , processes , systems and targets . Then you have to provide feedback , training and development . Only then can you truly evaluate an employee ’ s performance as being ‘ good ’ enough .
If you want help designing your business to run without you so that you can focus on growth , then the PCH process might be for you .
