ADVERTISING FEATURE ADVERTISING FEATURE Meet Bower Bailey's Kate GitshamBUILDING BUSINESS GROWTH Kate is one of Bower Bailey Solicitors most recent recruits, having joined the private client team in the Swindon office this March. She has worked in law since 2007, starting out as an office junior before embarking on her legal exams through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. Kate’s passion is private client work and for the past five years she’s worked as a fee earner in the busy private client team of another regional firm. We met Kate to find out more about her and her work.In the last 12 months, £1,211,055 worth of business has been passed between members of Business Growth Group. How did you get into law? Many years ago I had my first job after university as an office junior in a law firm, the rest is history! What do you love most about your job? The majority of people need a lawyer as they are experiencing a problem of one sort or another at a stressful or difficult period of their life. The ability to help them and guide them through their difficulties and see them come out the other side is what I love most about the job. What have you been working on since joining Bower Bailey? I have been working on a Drop-in Legal Surgery which I will be launching soon at the Swindon office. This will enable clients to come and see me on an informal basis, so I can provide them with information about Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney or probate matters. There will be more details available on our website shortly so keep an eye out. Why is it important to have a professional Will drawn up? A Will is one of the most important legal documents you will make in your life, it deserves time, consideration and professional advice. There are certain rules which dictate how your property and assets will be divided should you die without leaving a Will and these may not reflect how you wish your money and other possessions to be distributed. What are the pitfalls of a DIY Will? The most common pitfall is that DIY Wills are more likely to have been signed and witnessed incorrectly, therefore meaning the entire Will is invalid. If the Will is invalid, your chosen beneficiaries may not inherit and your estate will be divided as per the intestacy rules. A further pitfall is that DIY Wills are more often than not poorly drafted which can lead to adverse inheritance tax consequences for your estate and even lengthy and expensive litigation. Many estates can be eaten up by the legal fees incurred in trying to put things right. A high level of trust and close working relationships across the whole group and within sector specific sub-groups is key to this success, with the construction sub-group being a prime example. Business Growth Group is a referral-based networking group who meet every Friday morning at The Milk Churn in Melksham. With over 25 members representing a variety of industries and professions. In this issue of The Business Exchange we caught up with some of the group’s construction experts to find out their most frequently asked questions… Colin Booth, BY Joinery Kate’s Areas of Expertise • Preparation of Wills • Lasting Powers of Attorney • General Powers of Attorney • Probate and estate administration • Court of Protection Deputyship applications • Deeds of Variation Kate is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. These trusts are set up during your lifetime or on your death via your Will. They give your beneficiary a right to enjoy the income of the trust property, but reserve the capital element of the trust property for someone else. A Life Interest Trust can be beneficial if you are concerned, for example, about future care home fees or if you have children from a previous marriage. They supply and fit quality joinery to builders, developers and private customers not just across Wiltshire, but throughout the whole of the UK. More and more listed buildings are being acquired and restored year on year and alongside a pressing economic agenda, Colin is often asked how older buildings can be brought up to date effectively. “Improving thermal efficiency is usually the first concern with Jason Parmley Building Contractors “A Will is one of the most important legal documents you will make in your life, it deserves time, consideration and professional advice.” Jason Parmley, a building contractor based in Edington, has over 30 years’ experience working on a multitude of projects. Jason and his team lead on project plans and ideation right through to construction and sign off, working alongside architects and building control. The construction industry was impacted significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, as many industries were, with demand outweighing supply on both materials and skills. As we start to build back post-pandemic, Jason tells us there should always be consideration given to hold-ups, no matter when or where. “I will always be asked how long a job will take. That’s understandable of course but generally speaking, the bigger the James Coles, Coles Electrical Contractors James Coles, owner of Coles Electrical Contractors, has over 10 years’ experience in the electrical trade covering domestic, commercial and industrial projects. Fully qualified with NVQ Level 3, AM2 and an NIC Approved Contractor, the question he’s often asked is, like most tradespeople, what he enjoys most about his work. “I genuinely enjoy the challenge of finding and pinpointing faults and putting theory to the test. It's a case of process and elimination so breaking the circuit down into sections until you find the cause of the problem. It’s always satisfying to walk away knowing that I’ve left something electrically sound and safe.” Where is home? I am based just outside Swindon in Pewsey. What do you enjoy outside of work? Spending time with family, walking my dogs, keeping fit and watching football. Due to increasing environmental concerns, councils are increasingly prepared to consider slimline double-glazed units, as long as they are done sympathetically to the building. We also have to ensure we source timber, considered one of the most sustainable and environmentally favourable construction materials, from credibly certified forests in order to eliminate the risk of deforestation. Accoya wood is a perfect example of this." For more info: www.jasonparmley.co.uk job, the more hold-ups there can be. Material delays, unforeseen circumstances that arise, breakages, amends to plans and even holidays (yes, those in the building trades do take holidays!). “I’m also often (too often!) asked if a job can be done cheaper and of course it can. You’ll always find someone to provide a lower price but be mindful that some building contractors don’t quote to the specification provided. Once they’ve secured the contract they’ll start adding on extras as they go along, meaning the cost will rise and you’re in a situation you can’t get out of affordably. So be aware and ask for a full itemisation and costing for the entire project spec.” For more info: www.coleselectricalcontractors.uk “Being reasonably young in my industry, I often get asked if my work is certified. I appreciate the thought behind that. Many domestic clients might not know an electrician and as such whether the work is guaranteed. I'm registered with the NICEIC as an approved contractor so I can certify all works from domestic, commercial and industrial. I get tested on a yearly basis to ensure the work I deliver at any point is to high industry standards.” For more info: www.ckpaintinganddecorating.co.uk “The standard and the detail of finish we’re achieving now is unbeatable. It was a massive investment to make the shift in how I work, but it’s been extremely rewarding. People ask if I love my job or if I get bored of painting, but I really don’t. 90 per cent of the work is preparation and each job needs a different level of finish whether that be a spray finish or a traditional brush and roller."
