LOVE LOCAL
Malmesbury sponsored by Nathan Ind Financial Planning
Malmesbury is said to be the oldest continually inhabited town in England. Sat on top of a flat hill encircled by the River
Avon the town is often called ‘Queen of Hilltop Towns’ being England’s oldest borough with a rich history over 1000 years.
Malmesbury can be traced back to the fifth century, but modern excavations have revealed the remains of an Iron Age
Fort, which casts the settlement possibly as far back as 500 BC.
Malmesbury is also home to England’s
oldest hotel, the Old Bell, which has been
offering bed and board since 1220.
The honey stoned streets, a quaint
tumble of 17th and 18th-century shops and
inns bustle under the gaze of the imposing
and beautiful seventh-century abbey. When
St. Aldhelm founded the monastery the
site soon became a place of pilgrimage
and learning, and in the 10th Century,
Athelstan, the first king of (all) England
and grandson of Alfred the Great, made
Malmesbury his capital. He is buried under
the abbey grounds.
Love Local Malmesbury is sponsored by
Nathan Ind Financial Planning, a Partner
Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth
Management. The Nathan Ind office is
based in 1 Potters Yard, just off the high
street in the heart of the town.
Nathan said, “Malmesbury has a
very good community spirit with a great
high street offering, a diverse range
of amenities and friendly service. My
family and I love supporting our town’s
businesses as we feel this is so important
to the local economy. We also feel that
local businesses should be rewarded for
all their hard work and effort that goes into
providing their unique offerings.”

We asked Nathan how the Coronavirus
is affecting people’s decisions around their
finances. Nathan said, “When you live in
volatile and uncertain times as we are now,
many of our clients are asking us if they
should put their long-term plans on hold.
We are all reading or watching the news
and are aware of just how volatile, uncertain
and complex world issues are. Glance at a
stock market’s performance over the course
of a few weeks, and what stands out is
probably not the general direction of travel,
but the short-term see-sawing of prices.
Those characteristics can make the task of
planning for you and your family’s future feel
even more daunting. Do you DIY invest, seek
guidance, or look for professional financial
advice? Do you know your ISAs from your
pensions and unit trusts – and how do you
choose? Where should you invest? In public
or private markets? In equities, bonds, or
property? And should you seek out active
managers or passive funds? The number and
nuance of such questions can make us yearn
for simpler times – and bury our heads in the
sand. Yet we all know that won’t help secure
a brighter future for you and your family and
in times like these, it’s important to take
action and speak to someone you trust”.
