APPOINTED CARTER JONAS BOOSTS SOUTH WEST OFFERING WITH NEW RECRUITS Karl Paul (left) and James Phipps New appointment heralds growth for digital agency Swindon entrepreneur James Phipps has joined digital marketing and SEO specialist Smarter Media by becoming the company’s non-executive chairman. Run by business owner Karl Paul, Smarter Media has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and now employs nine people in Swindon. Karl, 37, started out on his own seven years ago and the business re-branded as Smarter Media in 2015. The former student of St Joseph’s School set out to ensure James Phipps became part of his team. “I’m thrilled with the growth we’ve had with Smarter Media,” Karl said. “However I recognise that in order to grow even further we need to learn from those who have been there, seen it and done it! I’ve known James for some time and was delighted when he agreed to support us to develop even further.” The team at Smarter Media, based in Crowood House, Swindon offer companies digital marketing services including bespoke search engine optimisation (SEO) campaigns, social media marketing, digital sales funnels and strategic digital content. To date clients have included Trak Employment Solutions, Moovahome and 24HourGym. James, who is the chairman and former chief executive of Excalibur Communications, said he’s thrilled to be part of the Smarter Media team. He said: “I have known the MD Karl for many years through his support of various charities and community projects I am involved in. I’ve also been a customer of his previously. “The digital marketing industry can be, frankly, full of smoke and mirrors and this company offers a high quality, transparent and meaningful service to its clients. “As a businessman myself I know companies need help digitally but it’s very hard to find people to trust. “Helping Smarter Media to grow and build on their strong reputation is highly satisfying for me.” During 2019, Karl hopes to recruit more talent to the Smarter Media team, expand their office premises, grow by acquisition and continue to support local charities. “This is going to be a year of growth for us and one where we will set goals in business and in supporting the Swindon community. We will also fundraise for our chosen charitable projects which include Threshold in Swindon, the Younite Foundation and Ronald McDonald House in Bristol.” The national property consultancy Carter Jonas has enhanced its commercial team in the South West with the appointments of William Pattemore, and Molly Williams to the roles of assistant surveyor (industrial sector) and graduate surveyor respectively. William graduated from the University of the West of England in 2018 with a degree in Real Estate, having completed 12 months’ work experience at BNP Paribas Real Estate during his University placement. Carter Jonas said, he has a broad understanding of the property industry, having undertaken various work experience roles while studying for his degree. In his new position, William will assist Alison Williams, who leads the firm’s South West Industrial team, working on instructions across the South West market, undertaking lettings, disposals and acquisitions. Molly returns to Carter Jonas on its graduate programme, having completed an internship with the firm over the summer of 2017. She graduated from Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester with a degree in Real Estate and is now undertaking her assessment of professional competence (APC), completing on the job training to qualify as a chartered surveyor with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). Throughout this process, she will assist in commercial instructions across the South West providing advice on lettings, disposals and acquisitions as well as valuation services. Philip Marshall, partner, commercial, Carter Jonas, said that Carter Jonas is committed to encouraging and nurturing new talent. He said:“It’s a pleasure to welcome both William and Molly to the team. As a business, we aim to deliver the best possible results for our clients and in doing so, place a great deal of importance on our staff and their training and personal development.” “Both William and Molly will be exposed to a wide range of work, different clients and exciting projects and I have no doubt that with the right support, they will play an important role as we continue to increase our share of the industrial, and wider commercial, property market.” Molly Williams William Pattemore THE BUSINESS EXCHANGE 2019 9
