SIXTH YEAR OF SUCCESS FOR
SOUTH WEST EXPO
The South West Expo returned to STEAM,
Swindon on July 5, showcasing some of the
region’s biggest and brightest companies.
The annual event featured networking
opportunities, workshops, an impressive
line-up of speakers and over 130 business
exhibitors.
Excalibur Communications supported
the show as headline sponsor and the
day began with a breakfast and keynote
speech on their partnership with CityFibre.

to provide ultrafast, full fibre connectivity
services to Swindon businesses and
organisations. It is expected to launch its
new range of gigabit internet services to the
local business community this autumn.
With highs of 28 degrees on the day of
the show both delegates and exhibitors
definitely had an ice-breaker to start
conversations.
CMD’s Dan Barfoot gives us
his takeaways from the day
The South West Expo was an inspiring
showcase of enterprise and innovation in
our local area.
As the Expo was held at the STEAM
rail museum in Swindon, for us a massive
cardboard train was the perfect prop for
catching attention. And during a summer
heatwave, the choice to offer USB powered
desktop fans as our branded merchandise
was a good one. #CMDfans stay cool at
work.
It was great to see such a diverse range
of industries and innovations represented
at the Expo, and we heard from business
owners, executives, and specialists as they
shared their knowledge and tips. In a talk
on ‘The Maths of Marketing and Science of
Sales’ Diego Lunardi from Maximiser shared
tips from behavioural psychology to help
close the deal – because people buy from
people that they like.
Jackie Chappell, the first female CEO
of British Rail spoke about how to be ‘a
flamingo in a flock of pigeons,’ pointing out
that standing out is a virtue that’s helped her
reach the top. Clinton Wingrove, author of
‘Super Teams’ shared research that shows
that the highest performing teams show
respect for their work and their colleagues.
He says this management style has helped
the England team perform well in the World
Cup – and by the time this column is printed,
we’ll know how well that worked out!
We’ve shared more tips from the keynote
speakers on the CMD blog.
