The Business Exchange Swindon & Wiltshire Edition 24: April/May 2016 | Page 3

CONTENTS NOTE FROM THE EDITOR INSIDE THIS EDITION 4 BUSINESS NEWS A round-up of this month’s business news 8 APPOINTED Welcome to the April/May edition of The Business Exchange Swindon & Wiltshire. Our special feature is ‘The age of the millennial', putting the spotlight on those born between 1982-2002 (turn to pages 18-19). It’s an interesting one for me, being a 1983 baby and celebrating/ commiserating turning 33 on April 12. It got me thinking. Am I a typical Millennial? Millennials are on average doing everything later than their older counterparts from getting married (yes, I’m single), to investing in a designer handbag or a holiday of a lifetime rather than a pension (yes, I’m guilty). When the financial crisis hit the UK I was a young graduate. I managed to get my first job working for a publishing house in Bath. It wasn’t exactly the job of my dreams, but it paid more than many graduates starting out now. The average income of a 22-30 year old is 8% lower than it was in 2008. I feel fortunate that I am one of the older members of my generation, as I think the world of employment has got even tougher in the last ten years. We’re often called the YOLN generation (You Only Live Now). Our priorities have changed inline with the vastly different financial landscape and it’s now more important to us to get our foot on the housing ladder than investing in a pension. I’m one of the lucky ones, I’m a homeowner, but saving for a home and my old age is an unrealistic aim for my era. We’re changing the financial rule-book and reshaping the economy and if you’re a business you need to get to know us as we’re the largest generation in history. Happy reading and enjoy the spring.
