Where innovation meets impact: SETsquared Bath

Innovation rarely succeeds in isolation. Ideas need space to be tested, challenged, and supported if they’ re to grow into something commercially viable. For over two decades, the SETsquared Innovation Centre at the University of Bath has been that space – helping entrepreneurs turn promising concepts into thriving high-growth businesses.
SETsquared Bath is part of a powerful partnership between six of the UK’ s leading research-led universities— Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey— working together to turn bright ideas into thriving businesses. As part of this world-renowned incubator, SETsquared Bath gives founders access to expert guidance, valuable networks, and the kind of practical, hands-on support that transforms potential into scalable success.
Medivys – Cutting GP admin, saving the NHS millions
Across England, GPs spend more than 25,000 hours every day on paperwork – the equivalent of over £ 1.1 billion annually lost to admin. For many doctors, hours that could be spent with patients are consumed by processing letters, referrals, and routine updates across fragmented systems.
Medivys set out to change that. Their platform uses machine learning to scan incoming patient letters, predict the actions a GP would usually take, and automatically update back-end systems. Instead of manually working through endless correspondence, doctors can review, approve, and move on – transforming hours of admin into moments.
The impact extends beyond time savings. By reducing the administrative load, Medivys is improving accuracy, reducing costs, and giving GPs space to focus on patient care. The company’ s long-term vision is to see its technology embedded across practices nationwide, creating a more efficient health system and a better experience for both doctors and patients.

Bactery: Making electricity from soil, green energy, right at your feet!
It began with an experiment in northeast Brazil: a soilpowered water purification system built to give remote communities safe drinking water. Instead of harmful chlorine treatments, the device used naturally occurring soil bacteria to convert organic matter into electricity – a small innovation with life-changing results.
From that first success grew a bigger vision: to create a renewable energy source designed for the toughest environments. Unlike conventional fuel cells, this technology is low-cost, low-maintenance, and resilient – making it possible to bring power to places where existing solutions are too expensive or impractical.
Today, the company is entering an exciting phase, forming commercial partnerships and scaling towards a bold goal: putting soil on par with other renewable energy sources and accelerating the journey to net zero.
