10 MINUTES WITH...

10 Minutes with … Tim Lerwill, Head of Charity and Not-for-Profit at Milsted Langdon

Tim Lerwill joined award-winning chartered accountants Milsted Langdon LLP at the end of 2024. Working out of the Bath office as General Practice Partner, he also heads up the firm’ s charity and not-for-profit specialism. Tim is taking over the reins from Gill Freeman who, from its inception, worked closely with The Business Exchange on the TBE South West Charity Conference & Expo. We met Tim to find out more about him and his work.
What attracted you to Milsted Langdon? Milsted Langdon has an excellent reputation, and it puts client care front and centre. Its whole ethos is around‘ Helping You Thrive’ and this applies to clients, but also to its employees. It’ s a place where staff are looked after and developed throughout their career.
I was also attracted to the depth of services the firm can offer my clients, from VAT and tax planning to corporate finance. For a regional practice we have a huge range of services that we can offer, and not just locally – Milsted Langdon is a member of MGI Worldwide, a major international accounting network with contacts in around 100 countries, which can help our clients with international interests.
The firm is very sociable internally, with a social committee in each office to arrange charity initiatives and teambuilding events to get involved with. Getting out and about in the local business community is also encouraged and we also organise many of our own events, from golf tournaments to chocolate making!
Who are your clients? Personally, my clients are made up of owner managed businesses and as well as charities and not-for-profit entities across the South West.
What are your main specialisms and interests? As Head of Charity and Not-for-Profit, the third sector is an important area for me, and I also specialise in audit with a focus on providing consultancy and helping clients through the lifecycle of their business.
What are the biggest concerns for your charity and not for-profit clients at present? There are many challenges for charities and not-for-profits at the moment, the main one being finding sources of donations and funds.
However, there are also opportunities for charities and a thriving community of support – something we see each year at the South West Charity Conference as well as our own charity roundtable events.
How are you working with them to circumnavigate the challenges? I always suggest that clients prepare budgets and cashflows to identify any pinch points – from this we can explore our options.
If you could share one bit of advice, what would it be? Aim for a good work-life balance, which is easier said than done!
What are your passions outside of work? I compete for Team GB Age-Group in triathlon, and have enjoyed competing around the world and seeing new places and meeting great people.
