Camilla welcomes Royal Osteoporosis Society back to Bath

Her Majesty The Queen Consort has officially opened the new Bath city centre headquarters of the Royal Osteoporosis Society ( ROS ).
Camilla has a long-standing relationship with the ROS , following her late mother ’ s and late grandmother ’ s devastating experiences of osteoporosis .
During her visit to the charity ’ s new offices at the Bath Quays Enterprise Area , Her Majesty met with specialist nurses who run the free ROS Helpline , which answers 13,000 enquiries a year , providing support and information for people living with osteoporosis , and their family members .
The ROS was launched by a group of clinicians at the Royal Mineral Water Hospital in 1986 . In recognition of the charity ’ s return to the city , the Queen Consort also attended an event at the Guildhall alongside regional leaders including the Mayor of the West of England , the Leader and Chairman of Bath City Council and the Mayor of Bath .
Osteoporosis causes bones to weaken , sometimes leading to fractures following minor injuries caused by something simple such as a cough , a fall from standing height or even a hug from grandchildren .
Fractures caused by osteoporosis are one of the most urgent threats to people living well in later life , and to the independence and freedom people deserve .
Craig Jones , Chief Executive at the Royal Osteoporosis Society , said , “ Bath has a proud medical history , having been a catalyst in the development of rheumatology as a discipline . The fact that the 3.5 million people with osteoporosis have a national charity at all is owed to the vision of medics based in the Royal Mineral Water Hospital in the 1980s . We ’ re very proud to be back home in Bath and hope to be considered one of the assets of this great city .”
During the Guildhall event , Her Majesty met with supporters of the charity , including Annette Browne , 64 , who suffered four painful spinal fractures due to osteoporosis .
Annette said , “ It was such a pleasure to meet Her Majesty today and I hope her involvement helps more people to understand osteoporosis and take simple steps to strengthen their bones earlier in life . This can make such a difference to people ’ s quality of life later on .”

BATH CITY SHOWS CARBON THE RED CARD

Bath City Football Club has launched an initiative to offset some of its carbon emissions . Working with Reduce Our Carbon Charitable Foundation , the Club will offset 36 metric tons of CO2 resulting from stadium operations and team travel , equating to more than 1,800 trees planted in projects run buy Reduce Our Carbon .
The Bath City FC offset will allow 1,860 trees , half of which will be fruit trees , to be planted in a project in Santa Lucía , Nicaragua . This will translate to a 20kg of carbon offset per tree , totalling 37.2 metric tonnes annually .
Jane Jones , Community Director at Bath City FC , said , “ As a community owned Club , we take our wider responsibility to have an impact beyond football very seriously . We ’ re delighted that this new partnership with Reduce our Carbon Charitable Foundation will not only offset our carbon emissions but will support impoverished communities
in Santa Lucía . We ’ re proud that ROC are sponsoring our stand and together we hope to raise awareness of this vital issue and to ‘ Show Carbon the Red Card ’.”
Amanda Spicer , Trustee of Reduce our Carbon Charitable Foundation said , “ We are delighted that Bath City FC are keen to play their part in offsetting their carbon footprint with us , and we look forward to working with them over the coming years , especially as the new sponsors of the Reduce Our Carbon stand at Twerton Park .
“ The overarching purpose of the
Foundation is to help the move to a low carbon economy . This is achieved through connecting individuals and businesses that want to offset their annual carbon footprints by supporting low income rural farming communities that are keen to engage in sustainable tree planting initiatives .
“ The community agroforestry models focus on harnessing all the benefits of trees , this allows communities to use their land in a sustainable way and generate additional recurring income from fruit crops . At least 50 per cent of trees planted are fruit trees .
The additional revenue can increase annual family incomes by 60 per cent .
“ By calculating Bath FC ’ s footprint from stadium utilities and coach travel we have been able to plant 1,800 trees which make a huge difference to those communities who have done little to contribute to climate change yet are the first to feel the destructive nature .”
