Managing probation periods : Advice for employers

The first few months in a position are crucial to welcoming and integrating an individual and enabling them to settle into their role as quickly as possible . Many employees will start a new position under a probation period of several months , which can be an effective way of assessing a new employee ’ s suitability for a role .
There are three potential outcomes to the probation period ; the employment can be confirmed , the employment can be terminated or the probation period can be extended .
Here are some top tips for successfully managing probationary periods :
1 . Break down tasks , create a training plan , communicate expectations and set targets for an employee to achieve throughout their probation period .
2 . Have regular , informal 1-to-1s in order to understand how the individual is settling in , identify any further support they need and to provide them with any feedback to date .
3 . Provide ongoing training opportunities and support .
4 . Hold an interim review meeting and a formal review meeting at the end of the probation .
5 . If things are not going as well as hoped , the individual should be advised where they need to improve if their probation is to be signed off at the end of the probationary period .
6 . They should also be advised at this point that their probation could be extended or their contract ended .
7 . Any concerns which come to light during this time should be raised with the employee immediately , not left for formal meetings .
8 . Confirm in writing the outcomes of meeting
